Description

Brass advertising token for S.D. Childs & Co. of Chicago, circa 1880. S.D. Childs & Company was a prominent Chicago printing, engraving, and die-sinking firm that produced stationery, business cards, checks, stock certificates, and tokens for numerous clients throughout the Midwest. The company was one of Chicago's most respected commercial printers during the post-Great Fire rebuilding era. Their tokens served as both advertising for their own services and as samples of their die-sinking and striking capabilities for potential clients. Brass, 22mm. Late 19th century tokens document American commercial life during the Gilded Age, when rapid industrialization transformed the retail landscape. Illinois tokens from the post-Civil War era reflect Chicago's explosive growth as the commercial hub of the American Midwest. Authentication relies on die characteristics, metal composition analysis, and comparison with known genuine specimens.
