Description

This undated white metal medal cataloged as SCH-C10 was produced by the Merriam Manufacturing Company and features Edwin Forrest, the first great American-born star of the stage. Forrest dominated American theater in the mid-nineteenth century, famous for his powerful performances in Shakespearean roles and his rivalry with the English actor William Charles Macready — a competition that erupted into the deadly Astor Place Riot of 1849. Private medal producers including the Franklin Mint, Medallic Art Company, and numerous smaller firms have supplemented U.S. Mint production, creating a rich and diverse medallic landscape for American collectors. The Schenkman catalog designation (SCH-C10) places this within the classified series of Merriam medals, which were produced in various metals during the Civil War era and later.
