(c.1860) Token Sage's Historical No. 6 White Metal State House Philadelphia
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This white metal version of Sage's Historical token number 6 depicts the State House in Philadelphia, the same design as the copper striking but in a different alloy. White metal, a tin-based alloy, was used for a portion of Sage's token production to provide variety in composition for collectors. White metal tokens tend to be softer and more susceptible to damage than their copper or brass counterparts, making well-preserved examples particularly desirable. The white metal composition gives the token a silvery appearance that some collectors prefer aesthetically. This striking demonstrates the multiple-metal production strategy that characterized Civil War-era token manufacturers, who understood that serious collectors would pursue every available variety of die combination and metal composition.
Rarity Notes
White metal striking, scarcer than copper. White metal tokens are prone to corrosion and damage, making sharp examples uncommon.
