(c.1860) Token Sage's Historical No. 6 Copper State House Philadelphia
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Sage's Historical token number 6 in copper depicts the State House in Philadelphia, better known today as Independence Hall. This is arguably the most historically significant building in the United States β the site where the Declaration of Independence was debated and adopted in July 1776 and where the United States Constitution was drafted during the summer of 1787. The building served as the Pennsylvania State House from its completion in 1753 until 1799, and its Assembly Room witnessed the most consequential political decisions in American history. Charles Sage's inclusion of this Philadelphia landmark alongside his New York subjects reflects the national scope of the historical narrative he sought to document through his token series. The building became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
