Coin Details
Description
Sage's Historical token number 5 in copper features Frank Jaudon, another member of the New York numismatic community who was active during the 1850s and 1860s. Jaudon appeared on at least two different tokens in the Sage series, indicating his close association with Charles Sage and his prominence within the collector circle. The mid-nineteenth century was a golden age for American numismatics, as the hobby transitioned from the preserve of wealthy gentlemen to a broader popular pursuit fueled by the proliferation of privately issued tokens, medals, and Civil War-era currency substitutes. Jaudon and his contemporaries were instrumental in building the institutional and social infrastructure that would support American numismatics for generations. This copper token is one of his two portrait appearances in the series.
Rarity Notes
Copper striking. First of two Jaudon portrait tokens in the Sage series.
