Description
Sage's Historical token number 4 in copper depicts Carpenters' Hall in Philadelphia, the meeting place of the First Continental Congress in September 1774. Built in 1770 as the guild hall of the Carpenters' Company of the City and County of Philadelphia, the building hosted the gathering of delegates from twelve of the thirteen colonies who came together to coordinate resistance to British policies including the Intolerable Acts. Carpenters' Hall thus occupies a foundational place in American democratic history as the site where the colonies first organized collective political action. Charles Sage expanded his token series beyond New York landmarks to include nationally significant buildings, reflecting the broad historical interests of his collector audience. The building still stands today in Philadelphia's Independence National Historical Park.
Rarity Notes
Copper striking. Carpenters' Hall is a significant historical subject with strong collector appeal.
