(c.1860) Token Sage's Historical No. 12 Copper Sir Henry Clinton
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Sage's Historical token number 12 in copper features Sir Henry Clinton, the same subject as token number 1 but paired with a different reverse die. Clinton served as British commander-in-chief in North America from 1778 to 1782, succeeding Sir William Howe. His tenure was marked by the strategic decision to shift British military operations to the southern colonies, resulting in initial victories in Georgia and South Carolina but ultimately leading to the catastrophic defeat at Yorktown in 1781. Clinton's relationship with his subordinate Lord Cornwallis was fractious, and the two men blamed each other for the British defeat. Charles Sage's use of the Clinton portrait on multiple tokens in the series reflects the importance of the British military leadership in the Revolutionary narrative of New York, which remained under British occupation throughout the war.
Rarity Notes
