Description

Sage's Historical token number 11 in copper depicts Washington's Head-Quarters, almost certainly referring to one of the several buildings used by General George Washington as his military headquarters during the Revolutionary War in the New York campaign theater. The Morris-Jumel Mansion in upper Manhattan served as Washington's headquarters during the Battle of Harlem Heights in 1776, and several other structures in the New York area hosted Washington during various phases of the war. Charles Sage selected subjects with strong ties to Revolutionary War history in the New York region, and Washington's headquarters held particular significance as the physical location where the commanding general planned military operations. This token connects the numismatic collector to the tangible places where American independence was won.

Rarity Notes

Copper striking. Washington-themed tokens are highly collectible. Higher numbered Sage's tokens tend to be scarcer.
