Description
Sage's Historical token number 10 in copper depicts the Liberty Tree, one of the most potent symbols of American resistance to British rule in the years leading to the Revolution. The original Liberty Tree was a famous elm in Boston near Boston Common where the Sons of Liberty gathered to protest the Stamp Act in 1765 and organize resistance to British taxation. The tree became such a powerful symbol that British soldiers cut it down in 1775, and the concept of Liberty Trees spread to other colonial cities as rallying points for patriot sentiment. Charles Sage's inclusion of this iconic symbol in his historical token series reflects the deep connection between numismatics and patriotic commemoration in mid-nineteenth-century America. The token served both as a collector piece and as a reminder of the revolutionary heritage that remained vivid in the national memory.
Rarity Notes
