Description

Brass merchant token issued by Francisco & Co. of Tennessee, circa 1850. Francisco & Co. was a Tennessee merchant firm active during the antebellum period. Southern merchant tokens from the 1850s are considerably scarcer than their Northern counterparts, as fewer Southern merchants adopted token advertising. Tennessee's commercial centers in Nashville, Memphis, and Knoxville supported a growing mercantile economy, but token issuance remained rare compared to New York, Philadelphia, and Boston. Brass, 22mm. The 1840s and 1850s saw merchant tokens evolve from simple trade pieces to more elaborate designs, as die sinkers like George H. Lovett and Robert Lovett Jr. elevated the craft. As an advertising piece, this token functioned as a tangible marketing tool in an era when word-of-mouth and physical reminders drove most retail commerce. Collector interest in Rulau-cataloged tokens continues to grow as the series gains recognition beyond specialized exonumia circles.

Rarity Notes

Rare. Antebellum Tennessee merchant token, one of only a handful of Tennessee attributions in the Rulau catalog. Southern merchant tokens from the 1850s are significantly rarer than their Northern equivalents. Collected by Tennessee numismatists and Southern commercial history enthusiasts.
