Description
This silver matte-finish medal from the San Francisco Mint honors President Rutherford B. Hayes, the nineteenth president who served from 1877 to 1881. Hayes won one of the most disputed elections in American history — the 1876 contest against Samuel Tilden was decided by a special electoral commission amid allegations of fraud in three Southern states. Hayes's presidency ended Reconstruction through the Compromise of 1877, which withdrew federal troops from the South in exchange for Southern acceptance of his election. A reformer by temperament, Hayes fought for civil service reform, vetoed attempts to restrict Chinese immigration, and began the process of rebuilding the Navy. He kept his pledge to serve only one term. This silver matte-finish medal documents a president whose disputed election presaged later controversies and whose end of Reconstruction had profound consequences for African Americans in the South for generations to come.
Rarity Notes
Scarce. San Francisco Mint silver matte-finish presidential medal. Hayes is a less commonly collected president.
