Description
The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Silver Medal is part of the U.S. Mint's ongoing Presidential Silver Medal series, launched in 2018 with George Washington and issuing four medals per year in presidential order. This one-ounce .999 fine silver medal reproduces the original Mint medal designs by George T. Morgan, the renowned Chief Engraver best known for the Morgan Silver Dollar. The obverse portrays Hayes in a dignified left-facing bust with the inscription "RUTHERFORD B. HAYES," while the reverse features a laurel wreath surrounding the text "PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES" and "INAUGURATED MARCH 5. 1877." The unusual March 5 inauguration date reflects the fact that March 4 fell on a Sunday in 1877, so the public ceremony was held the following day. Hayes assumed office after the most disputed election in American history, resolved by a Congressional electoral commission just days before the inauguration. The matte finish applied at the San Francisco Mint gives the medal an appearance similar to an uncirculated coin, with soft luster and fine granular surfaces. Each medal measures 40.6mm in diameter and comes encapsulated with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Rarity Notes
San Francisco Mint production, one ounce .999 fine silver. No mintage limit but production tied to demand window. Matte finish is the standard surface for Presidential Silver Medals.
