Description

The James A. Garfield Presidential Silver Medal honors the twentieth president of the United States, who served the second-shortest presidency in American history. Struck in one ounce of .999 fine silver at the San Francisco Mint with a matte finish, this medal reproduces the original U.S. Mint medal designs by Charles E. Barber, who served as Chief Engraver from 1879 to 1917. The obverse depicts Garfield in a bearded left-facing bust with the inscription "JAMES A. GARFIELD." The reverse displays a wreath of laurel and oak leaves tied with crossed ribbons, encircling the somber inscriptions "INAUGURATED PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES MARCH 4, 1881," "ASSASSINATED JULY 2, 1881," and "DIED SEPT 19, 1881." Garfield was shot by Charles Guiteau at a Washington railroad station just four months into his term and lingered for nearly twelve weeks before succumbing to his wounds and the infection worsened by his physicians' interventions. The medal became available on April 30, 2024 at an initial price of $75. Each medal measures 40.6mm in diameter, matching the American Silver Eagle planchet size.
