Description
This matte-finish bronze medal at 76mm diameter from 2022 commemorates the events of January 6, 2021, at the United States Capitol. On that date, a mob breached the Capitol building during the certification of the 2020 presidential election results, resulting in five deaths and the first breach of the Capitol since the British burning of Washington in 1814. The medal honors the law enforcement officers — including the United States Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, D.C. — who defended the Capitol and its occupants during the assault. Congress authorized medals for the officers who protected the legislative branch on that day. The 76mm bronze format is the U.S. Mint's large-format commemorative standard. The matte finish provides a solemn, dignified appearance appropriate to the gravity of the events commemorated. This medal documents one of the most significant and divisive events in modern American political history.
Rarity Notes
Scarce. U.S. Mint 76mm matte bronze. The January 6 Capitol medal is a significant modern commemorative issue.
