Description
This three-inch bronze medal from 2020, produced by the U.S. Mint, is the large-format version of the USS Indianapolis (CA-35) commemorative medal. At three inches (76mm) diameter, this medal provides the most detailed rendering of the design honoring the crew of the heavy cruiser that was lost on July 30, 1945, after completing its secret mission to deliver components of the Little Boy atomic bomb. The larger format allows for more intricate depiction of the ship and the story of the 316 survivors who endured four harrowing days in shark-infested waters. The USS Indianapolis received the Presidential Unit Citation and ten battle stars for her World War II service. Captain Charles McVay III, the ship's commanding officer, was court-martialed in a controversial proceeding but was posthumously exonerated by Congress in 2000. This three-inch medal is the premium display version, complementing the smaller 1.5-inch format (PCGS #853373).
Rarity Notes
Scarce. U.S. Mint 3-inch bronze medal. Large format has lower production than the 1.5-inch version.
