Description
This 2018-P medal honors the Office of Strategic Services, the World War II intelligence agency that was the predecessor of the Central Intelligence Agency. The OSS, established in 1942 under the direction of William "Wild Bill" Donovan, conducted espionage, sabotage, and guerrilla warfare operations behind enemy lines in both the European and Pacific theaters. Its agents included future CIA directors, Pulitzer Prize winners, and a remarkable array of academics, athletes, and adventurers recruited for their specialized skills. Congress awarded the Congressional Gold Medal to the OSS in 2018, and this Philadelphia Mint medal is the standard-format duplicate produced for public sale. The "P" mint mark indicates Philadelphia production. The OSS medal represents belated recognition of the approximately 13,000 men and women who served in one of the most secretive and consequential organizations of the war, many of whose contributions remained classified for decades after the conflict ended.
