Description

This 2017 gilt silver medal is a triple commemorative piece issued by the American Israel Numismatic Association (AINA) to mark three milestones simultaneously: AINA's 50th anniversary (1967-2017), the 100th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration (1917-2017), and the 50th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem (1967-2017). The obverse features a portrait of Arthur James Balfour, the British Foreign Secretary who authored the historic November 2, 1917 letter to Lord Rothschild declaring Britain's support for a Jewish national home in Palestine. The medal's design concepts were created by Mel Wacks, longtime AINA president and noted numismatic author, and sculpted by renowned medalist Heidi Wastweet, who has created over a thousand coins, medals, and tokens since 1987. The medals were struck by Medallic Art Company. This gilt silver version — .999 fine silver with gold plating — was limited to just 50 pieces, making it the scarcest of the three compositions offered (bronze limited to 250, silver to 100). The two-inch diameter provides ample canvas for the detailed Balfour portrait and the Declaration text on the reverse.

Rarity Notes

Gilt silver (gold-plated .999 silver), 2 inches. Limited to 50 pieces — the scarcest of three compositions. Designed by Mel Wacks, sculpted by Heidi Wastweet, struck by Medallic Art Company.
