Description
This 2015 medal honors President Harry S. Truman, the thirty-third president who made some of the most consequential decisions in modern history. Truman assumed the presidency upon FDR's death in April 1945 and within months authorized the use of atomic weapons against Japan, ending World War II. His presidency saw the beginning of the Cold War, the Marshall Plan that rebuilt Europe, the creation of NATO, the Berlin Airlift, the recognition of Israel, the desegregation of the armed forces, and the Korean War. Truman's decision to fire General MacArthur in 1951 affirmed the principle of civilian control over the military. Though he left office with low approval ratings, Truman's reputation has risen dramatically among historians, who now consistently rank him among the top ten presidents. This medal documents the legacy of a president whose blunt, decisive style and willingness to accept responsibility — symbolized by his famous desk sign "The Buck Stops Here" — have become bywords for presidential leadership.
Rarity Notes
