Description
This 2015 medal honors President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the thirty-fourth president and Supreme Allied Commander in Europe during World War II. Eisenhower led the D-Day invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944 — the largest amphibious military operation in history — and accepted Germany's unconditional surrender in May 1945. As president from 1953 to 1961, Eisenhower oversaw the creation of the Interstate Highway System, established NASA, enforced school desegregation at Little Rock, and navigated the Cold War with a strategy of nuclear deterrence. His farewell address warning against the "military-industrial complex" remains one of the most prescient presidential speeches in American history. This medal joins a long tradition of Eisenhower numismatic items that includes the Eisenhower Dollar (1971-1978). The 2015 production date places this among the modern commemorative medal issues honoring past presidents for collectors and history enthusiasts.
Rarity Notes
