Description
This 2015 brass medal commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Pacific Coast Numismatic Society (PCNS), founded in 1915 in San Francisco by Farran Zerbe during the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. The brass composition represents the mid-range version of the three centennial medal metals, positioned between the silver and copper offerings. Brass — an alloy of copper and zinc — has a warm golden color that evokes the historical connection between San Francisco, the Gold Rush, and the San Francisco Mint, all of which are central to the PCNS story. The society was established at a time when the West was still relatively young in numismatic terms, and PCNS helped cultivate the scholarly study of coins and medals across the Pacific Coast. Over its first century, PCNS published hundreds of papers, hosted countless lectures, and nurtured generations of collectors in the Bay Area and beyond. The centennial medals serve as lasting tributes to the society's longevity and to the vision of Farran Zerbe, who recognized that the West needed its own numismatic institution.
Rarity Notes
Brass composition, mid-tier of the three PCNS centennial metals. Limited production for club centennial distribution.
