2009 Medal Women AF Serv. Pilots 3"
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This 2009 three-inch medal honors the Women Airforce Service Pilots — the WASP — who served during World War II flying military aircraft across the United States. The WASP program, active from 1943 to 1944 under the direction of Jacqueline Cochran, trained over 1,000 women to fly every type of military aircraft in the U.S. inventory, including fighters, bombers, and transport planes. These women ferried aircraft from factories to bases, towed targets for anti-aircraft training, and served as test and instructional pilots, freeing male pilots for combat overseas. Thirty-eight WASP members died in service, yet the program was disbanded in 1944 and its members were denied military veteran status until 1977. Congress awarded the WASP the Congressional Gold Medal in 2009, and this three-inch bronze medal reproduces the design for collector distribution. The WASP story embodies courage, patriotism, and the decades-long struggle for recognition that has defined women's military service.
