(2008) Medal Daw Aung San Suu Kyi
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This undated medal honors Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese pro-democracy leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. This undated version predates or is distinct from the 2008 Congressional Gold Medal duplicate (PCGS #755421). Suu Kyi's story — daughter of Burma's independence hero, Oxford-educated, Nobel laureate, political prisoner for over fifteen years — captivated the global imagination and made her one of the most recognizable symbols of the struggle for democracy in Asia. The medallic commemorative tradition in America accelerated during the centennial celebrations of the late nineteenth century, with the 1876 Centennial Exposition generating an unprecedented number of medallic issues. Her later fall from international grace over the Rohingya crisis adds complexity to her legacy but does not diminish the historical significance of the medals produced during her imprisonment.
Rarity Notes
Undated Aung San Suu Kyi medal. Distinct from the 2008 Congressional Gold Medal issue.
