2006 Medal Tuskegee Airmen Yellow Bronze 76mm

Coin Details
Description
This 2006 yellow bronze medal at 76mm honors the Tuskegee Airmen in the U.S. Mint's larger format Congressional Gold Medal duplicate. The 76mm version provides a display-quality tribute to the approximately 1,000 African American pilots and 15,000 ground personnel who served in the Tuskegee Airman program during World War II. The Tuskegee Airmen disproved the racist notion that Black soldiers were incapable of flying complex military aircraft, and their combat record — including the famous "Red Tails" fighter escort missions that never lost a bomber to enemy fighters — stands among the finest in military aviation history. Commemorative medals serve as primary historical documents, recording events and honoring individuals in a format that was often produced closer to the actual occurrence than published histories or official records.
