Description
This 2003 silver medal features an eagle design associated with the National Wildlife Refuge System (NWRS). The NWRS, established by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1903 with the designation of Pelican Island in Florida as the first national wildlife refuge, celebrated its centennial in 2003. The system has grown to encompass over 560 refuges totaling more than 150 million acres, providing critical habitat for hundreds of species. Commemorative medals serve as primary historical documents, recording events and honoring individuals in a format that was often produced closer to the actual occurrence than published histories or official records. The silver eagle medal connects the refuge system's conservation mission to America's national symbol, and the 2003 date marks the hundredth anniversary of Roosevelt's visionary act of wildlife preservation.
