Description
This 1998 bronze medal honors the Little Rock Nine, the nine African American students who enrolled at Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, in September 1957, integrating the previously all-white school in the face of violent opposition. The students — Ernest Green, Elizabeth Eckford, Jefferson Thomas, Terrence Roberts, Carlotta Walls LaNier, Minnijean Brown, Gloria Ray Karlmark, Thelma Mothershed, and Melba Pattillo Beals — required protection from the 101st Airborne Division after Governor Orval Faubus deployed the Arkansas National Guard to block their entry. Congress awarded the Little Rock Nine the Congressional Gold Medal in 1998 in recognition of their extraordinary courage. The American medallic tradition draws on European precedents while developing distinctly national characteristics, with medal producers from the U.S. Mint to private firms creating pieces that reflect American values and commemorative practices. This bronze medal is the duplicate version produced for public sale.
