Coin Details
Description
This eight-ounce silver medal from 1997 commemorates the 375th anniversary of the sinking of the Nuestra Senora de Atocha, a Spanish treasure galleon that sank in a hurricane off the Florida Keys on September 6, 1622. The Atocha was carrying an enormous cargo of gold, silver, emeralds, and other treasures from the New World back to Spain when the storm destroyed the fleet. The wreck remained lost for over three centuries until treasure hunter Mel Fisher discovered it in 1985, after a sixteen-year search that became one of the most famous treasure recovery stories in modern history. The recovered treasure, valued at approximately $450 million, included silver bars, gold chains, emeralds, and thousands of silver coins. This eight-ounce silver medal — a substantial precious metal piece — commemorates the anniversary of the sinking that created one of the richest shipwrecks ever discovered, connecting the romance of Spanish colonial treasure to the modern treasure-hunting industry based in Key West, Florida.
