Description
This 1996 medal from the Western Reserve Numismatic Club is a counterstamped piece applied to a host 1979-P Susan B. Anthony dollar. The 1979-P SBA dollar was the inaugural issue of the controversial small-dollar coin that confused the public with its similar size to the quarter dollar. Using a Susan B. Anthony dollar as a host coin for a 1996 counterstamp program is somewhat ironic, as the coin's unpopularity had led to the suspension of production after 1981, though it would briefly return in 1999 before being replaced by the Sacagawea dollar. The Susan B. Anthony dollar's compact size — 26.5 millimeters versus the 38.1-millimeter Morgan and Eisenhower dollars — creates a very different counterstamp presentation, with the club's mark occupying a proportionally larger area of the coin's surface. The Western Reserve Numismatic Club's inclusion of the SBA dollar among its host coins demonstrates a comprehensive approach to the silver dollar series, spanning from the Morgan through the Eisenhower to the first small-format dollar. Despite its public reputation, the SBA dollar holds a significant place in American coinage history as the first circulating U.S. coin to honor a non-mythological woman.
Rarity Notes
Scarce counterstamped piece on 1979-P Susan B. Anthony dollar host. Unusual small-dollar host adds variety to the series.
