Description
This 1996 medal from the Western Reserve Numismatic Club is a counterstamped piece applied to a host 1922 Peace silver dollar. The 1922 Peace dollar was the first year of standard-relief production, following the switch from the original 1921 high-relief design that had proven difficult for the Mint to produce in volume. The 1922 date is the highest-mintage year of the Peace dollar series, with Philadelphia alone producing over fifty-one million pieces, making it the most common and affordable entry point for Peace dollar collectors. The Western Reserve Numismatic Club's counterstamp on a 1922 Peace dollar continues the club's exploration of the silver dollar series as host coins, following the 1921 Morgan and 1921 Peace versions in the 1996 program. The 1922 date represents the mature Peace dollar design in its standard-relief format, the form in which most collectors encounter the series. The abundant availability of 1922 Peace dollars in high grades made them practical host coins for the counterstamp program, as the club could acquire quality examples without the premium associated with scarcer dates in the series.
Rarity Notes
Scarce counterstamped piece on 1922 Peace dollar host. Common host date but the counterstamp adds organizational significance.
