Description

This 1996 medal from the Western Reserve Numismatic Club is a counterstamped piece applied to a host 1921 Peace silver dollar. The 1921 Peace dollar was the first year of Anthony de Francisci's iconic design, which featured a youthful Liberty modeled after his wife Teresa on the obverse and a perched bald eagle on the reverse. The 1921 Peace dollar was struck in high relief, creating a visually stunning coin that collectors have prized since its release. Using this first-year Peace dollar as a counterstamp host pairs one of the most celebrated American coin designs with the Western Reserve club's organizational identity. The 1921 Peace dollar's high-relief design gives the host coin a distinctive sculptural quality that differentiates it from later years produced in standard relief. The Western Reserve Numismatic Club's 1996 program strategically paired the last Morgan dollar (also 1921) and the first Peace dollar, creating companion pieces that span the transition between two of the most collected silver dollar series in American numismatics. Together, these two 1921-dated counterstamped pieces document one of the most significant design transitions in U.S. coinage history through the lens of a local coin club's commemorative program.

Rarity Notes

Scarce counterstamped piece on 1921 Peace dollar host. First-year high-relief Peace dollar host is particularly desirable.
