1992 Medal Persian Gulf Veterans
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This 1992 medal honors veterans of the Persian Gulf War (Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm), the 1990-1991 military campaign that liberated Kuwait from Iraqi occupation. The war, which began with an air campaign on January 17, 1991, and concluded with a 100-hour ground offensive that routed Iraqi forces, was the first major American military operation since Vietnam and demonstrated the effectiveness of modern precision weaponry and the all-volunteer military. The swift and decisive victory restored American military confidence and generated widespread public support for the troops. Medal collecting has experienced renewed interest in recent decades as numismatists have recognized these pieces as historical artifacts deserving the same scholarly attention given to coins and currency. This veterans' medal honors the approximately 700,000 American service members who participated in the Gulf War.
