Description

This 1989 gold medal containing one troy ounce of gold features the South Dakota Bison design. South Dakota's association with the American bison is both historical and contemporary — the state was home to the last wild herds during the nineteenth century and has been at the forefront of bison conservation and ranching. The one-ounce gold format positions this as both a numismatic collectible and a bullion investment piece. Regional gold medals featuring state symbols were popular in the late 1980s as alternatives to the U.S. Private medal producers including the Franklin Mint, Medallic Art Company, and numerous smaller firms have supplemented U.S. Mint production, creating a rich and diverse medallic landscape for American collectors. Mint's American Eagle program, offering local character alongside precious metal content.
