Description
This 1989 bronze medal at 76mm commemorates the Bicentennial of the United States Treasury Department, established on September 2, 1789. The Treasury was one of the original executive departments created by the First Congress, with Alexander Hamilton as its first Secretary. Hamilton's vision for the Treasury — encompassing a national bank, assumption of state debts, and a sound monetary system — established the financial foundations of the new republic. The 76mm bronze format is the U.S. Mint's standard for major commemorative medals. This medal celebrates two hundred years of Treasury operations, encompassing currency production, tax collection, economic policy, and oversight of the U.S. Private medal producers including the Franklin Mint, Medallic Art Company, and numerous smaller firms have supplemented U.S. Mint production, creating a rich and diverse medallic landscape for American collectors.
