Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Swoger catalog number D1988-2b. This 6-ounce silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia for the Young Astronauts program, featuring a large-format design. At six troy ounces, this medal is half the weight of the D1988-2a version but still a substantial silver piece. The Space Shuttle program, which inspired the Young Astronauts initiative, flew 135 missions between 1981 and 2011, carrying astronauts to low Earth orbit for scientific research, satellite deployment, and construction of the International Space Station. The program featured five operational orbiters: Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavour. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This 6-ounce version provides a mid-range silver option between the 12-ounce and standard formats.
Rarity Notes
Six-ounce silver medal — a substantial precious-metal issue. Produced in limited quantities given the high silver content. Exact mintage not separately reported.
