1986 Medal Thomas Jefferson Statue of Liberty

Description
This 1986 medal features Thomas Jefferson as part of the Statue of Liberty centennial medal series. Jefferson's authorship of the Declaration of Independence, with its revolutionary assertion that "all men are created equal" and endowed with "unalienable Rights" including "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness," established the philosophical foundation that the Statue of Liberty would come to symbolize. Jefferson also served as Minister to France, where the concept of the statue originated in Franco-American friendship circles. Medal collecting has experienced renewed interest in recent decades as numismatists have recognized these pieces as historical artifacts deserving the same scholarly attention given to coins and currency. This medal connects the intellectual author of American liberty with the physical embodiment of that ideal in New York Harbor.
