Description
This 1986 medal depicts Charles A. Lindbergh in connection with the Statue of Liberty centennial celebration. Lindbergh's historic solo transatlantic flight in 1927 made him the most famous American of the twentieth century, and his connection to the Statue of Liberty is both symbolic and literal — the statue was one of the landmarks he flew past approaching and departing New York. The 1986 Statue of Liberty centennial generated numerous commemorative medals featuring American heroes and themes associated with liberty and achievement. The medallic commemorative tradition in America accelerated during the centennial celebrations of the late nineteenth century, with the 1876 Centennial Exposition generating an unprecedented number of medallic issues. Lindbergh's flight from New York to Paris embodied the American spirit of daring and innovation that the statue represents.
