1981 Medal Medallic Art Co. Silver Ronald Reagan Inauguration
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This silver medal by Medallic Art Company commemorates the first inauguration of Ronald Reagan in January 1981. The silver version occupies the middle tier of the Reagan inaugural medal program, above bronze, copper, and gilt bronze but below 14K gold. Silver inaugural medals from MACO were produced for serious collectors and mid-level presentations, offering precious metal prestige at a more accessible price than gold. Reagan's inauguration launched what supporters called the "Reagan Revolution" — a fundamental reorientation of American government toward lower taxes, reduced regulation, and a stronger military posture against the Soviet Union. The silver medal captures Reagan's confident, optimistic bearing at the moment he assumed the presidency at age 69, then the oldest person to hold the office. Medallic Art Company's silver inaugural medals consistently represented the best-selling precious metal format, as gold was too expensive for most collectors while silver offered both the prestige of precious metal content and affordability sufficient for dedicated collectors to acquire.
