Description
This 1978 gold medal commemorates Valley Forge, the site of the Continental Army's brutal winter encampment during the American Revolution from December 1777 to June 1778. Washington's army endured freezing temperatures, inadequate food and clothing, and rampant disease at Valley Forge, yet emerged as a disciplined fighting force trained by Baron von Steuben. The winter at Valley Forge has become the quintessential symbol of American revolutionary perseverance. The gold composition indicates a premium U.S. Mint or private mint production, timed to the bicentennial of the Valley Forge encampment (1977-78). Museum collections of American medals at the Smithsonian, American Numismatic Society, and regional historical societies provide essential reference material for researchers studying material culture and commemorative practices. Valley Forge medals are collected by both numismatists and Revolutionary War history enthusiasts.
