Coin Details
Description
Swoger catalog number D1976-4b. This medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to honor the bicentennial of Thomas Jefferson. Beyond his authorship of the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson founded the University of Virginia in 1819, designed its distinctive Academical Village, doubled the size of the nation through the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, and sponsored the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804-1806. His architectural masterpiece Monticello and his political philosophy of limited government and individual rights remain central to American identity. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. The American Liberty medal series, launched as a modern artistic initiative, features innovative designs that push the boundaries of traditional numismatic imagery while maintaining the technical excellence expected of official U.S. Mint productions. This is another variant in the D1976-4 Jefferson bicentennial series.
