Description
This 1976 platinum medal at 32mm depicts George Washington's farewell to his officers, produced by the Medallic Art Company (MACO). The scene commemorates Washington's emotional farewell at Fraunces Tavern in New York City on December 4, 1783, when he took leave of his Continental Army officers before resigning his commission β an act of voluntary relinquishment of military power that astonished the world and established the precedent of civilian control of the military. The platinum composition makes this an extraordinarily rare and valuable piece; platinum medals were seldom produced in 1976 and represent the absolute premium tier of Bicentennial commemoratives. The study of medal production techniques β from die engraving and planchet preparation through striking and finishing β reveals the intersection of artistic vision and industrial manufacturing that characterizes the medallic arts. MACO was America's premier private medal producer throughout the twentieth century.
