1976 Medal 200 Years of Freedom
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This 1976 medal celebrates "200 Years of Freedom," marking the Bicentennial of American independence. The Bicentennial generated an enormous outpouring of commemorative medals, coins, and memorabilia from both the U.S. Mint and private producers. This medal captures the central theme of the celebration — two centuries of democratic self-governance and individual liberty since the Declaration of Independence. Commemorative medals serve as primary historical documents, recording events and honoring individuals in a format that was often produced closer to the actual occurrence than published histories or official records. The Bicentennial was particularly meaningful coming in the wake of the Watergate crisis, as Americans reaffirmed their commitment to the constitutional principles that had sustained the republic through previous periods of crisis.
