Coin Details
Description
Swoger catalog number D1976-1c. This bronze medal was struck at the United States Mint facility in Denver to commemorate Colorado's centennial of statehood. The state's diverse geography — from the Great Plains to the Rocky Mountains with over fifty peaks exceeding 14,000 feet — made it a destination for miners, ranchers, and eventually tourists and outdoor enthusiasts. The centennial celebrations in 1976 coincided with the national Bicentennial, giving Colorado a unique dual celebration. Denver's role as the "Mile High City" and the state capital made the Denver Mint the natural production facility for this commemorative. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This bronze issue is the standard base-metal variant of the D1976-1 Colorado centennial series.
