Description
Swoger catalog number D1975-1a. This silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate the bicentennial of Paul Revere's famous ride on April 18-19, 1775. The midnight ride was part of a coordinated warning system — Revere, William Dawes, and Dr. Samuel Prescott all rode that night, though only Prescott completed the journey to Concord, as Revere was captured by a British patrol. The battles of Lexington and Concord the following morning on April 19, 1775, marked the beginning of armed conflict in the American Revolution, with the "shot heard round the world" fired at Concord's North Bridge. The silver composition befits the subject, given Revere's own fame as a master silversmith. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward.
Rarity Notes
