Description
The 1975 Assay Commission medal in bronze, cataloged as JK-AC-119, features President Gerald R. Ford on the obverse. Ford had assumed the presidency in August 1974 following Richard Nixon's resignation, making him the only person to serve as president without having been elected to either the presidency or vice presidency. The "AE" designation confirms the standard bronze composition. The 1975 commission tested coins from the pivotal year when Bicentennial coinage production began — the dual-dated 1776-1976 quarters, half dollars, and dollars that would become some of the most widely recognized American coins of the twentieth century. Ford's portrait on the Assay Commission medal documented the brief and historically unique presidency that bridged the Watergate crisis and the Bicentennial celebration. This was among the final Assay Commission medals produced, as Congress would abolish the commission in 1980, ending a tradition that stretched back to the founding of the republic.
