Description

Swoger catalog number D1974-2b. This yellow bronze medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia as part of the John Adams Bicentennial series within the American Revolution Bicentennial program. John Adams's contributions to independence included drafting the Massachusetts Constitution of 1780 — the oldest functioning written constitution in continuous use in the world — and serving as a commissioner who negotiated the Treaty of Paris ending the Revolutionary War in 1783. Adams and Thomas Jefferson maintained a remarkable correspondence in their later years, and both died on July 4, 1826, the fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The yellow bronze alloy gives this medal a distinctive golden appearance. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward.
