Coin Details
Description
This 1974 token honors Frederic G. Mantei, produced in connection with the United States Assay Commission. The Assay Commission was an annual body appointed by the President of the United States to examine and test the fineness and weight of coins produced by the U.S. Mint during the preceding year, ensuring compliance with legal standards. Membership on the Assay Commission was considered a prestigious honor within numismatic circles, and commemorative tokens and medals were frequently produced for commission members and events. The tradition of the Assay Commission dated back to 1792, and its tokens are collected as a distinct series documenting the individuals and events associated with this important oversight function. Congress abolished the Assay Commission in 1977, making pre-1977 tokens historical artifacts of a defunct institution.
Rarity Notes
Assay Commission token. Limited production for commission members and events. Scarce.
