Description
Swoger catalog number D1974-1c. This standard-size silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia for Expo '74 in Spokane, Washington. The World's Fair drew 5.6 million visitors to the smallest city ever to host an officially sanctioned international exposition. Spokane, with a metropolitan population of about 300,000, leveraged the fair to transform its downtown from a deteriorating rail yard district into a modern urban park. The Expo's environmental theme was reinforced by its location on the Spokane River, where cleanup efforts preceding the fair removed decades of industrial pollution. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This standard-size silver provides an affordable precious-metal option compared to the 64mm silver version.
