Description
Swoger catalog number D1974-1a. This 64mm silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia for Expo '74, the 1974 World's Fair held in Spokane, Washington, from May 4 to November 3, 1974. Themed "Celebrating Tomorrow's Fresh, New Environment," Expo '74 was the first World's Fair dedicated to the environment. The exposition transformed 100 acres of blighted railroad yards along the Spokane River into Riverfront Park, which remains the centerpiece of downtown Spokane. Over 5.6 million visitors attended, making it one of the most successful small-city world's fairs in history. The environmental theme reflected growing American awareness following the first Earth Day in 1970 and the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency. The 64mm diameter provides a large format for this premium silver issue. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward.
Rarity Notes
Large-format 64mm silver medal — the premium Spokane Expo issue. Silver composition and oversized format ensure limited production. Exact mintage not separately reported.
