Description
This bronze medal from 1974 depicts the United States Customhouse in Savannah, Georgia, part of a series honoring historic federal customhouse buildings. Savannah, founded in 1733 as the first city in the Colony of Georgia, developed into one of the most important cotton ports in the antebellum South. The Savannah Customhouse, designed by John S. Norris and completed in 1852 in the Greek Revival style, processed duties on imported goods while overseeing the export of cotton that flowed through the port from Georgia's vast plantation economy. Savannah's port remained commercially significant through the twentieth century and continues to operate as one of the busiest container ports in North America. The customhouse building reflects the architectural ambition of a prosperous Southern port city in the decades before the Civil War. This medal documents the federal presence in one of the most historically significant and architecturally preserved cities in the American South.
