Description
This bronze medal from 1974 depicts the United States Customhouse in Georgetown, Washington, D.C., part of a series honoring historic federal customhouse buildings. Georgetown, originally an independent port town founded in 1751 — predating the establishment of Washington, D.C. — was one of the most important tobacco and grain shipping ports on the Potomac River. The Georgetown Customhouse processed goods flowing through this busy colonial-era port, which served as a commercial gateway between the Chesapeake Bay trade routes and the agricultural hinterland of Virginia and Maryland. Georgetown was incorporated into the District of Columbia in 1871 but has retained its distinct character and many of its historic buildings. This medal documents the federal presence in one of the oldest continuously occupied commercial districts in the national capital area, connecting the early republic's maritime commerce to the broader story of American trade and tariff policy.
Rarity Notes
