1974 Medal D1974-1agp, Gilt-Silver Spokane Expo Large
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Swoger catalog number D1974-1agp. This gilt-silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia for Expo '74 in Spokane. The gilt-silver composition — silver with a gold surface treatment — combines the weight and value of silver with the warm visual appearance of gold. The "gp" suffix in the catalog number denotes "gold plated" or "gilt plate." Expo '74 was notable for featuring the first IMAX film, and for the participation of the Soviet Union as a major exhibitor during the era of detente. The fair also featured the construction of a U.S. Pavilion designed to be converted into a permanent structure after the exposition, which it remains. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This large gilt-silver issue represents one of the most distinctive metal variants in the Spokane Expo series.
Rarity Notes
Gilt-silver composition — an uncommon and distinctive treatment. The dual precious-metal presentation indicates very limited production. Exact mintage not separately reported.
